July 22, 2019 (WATERLOO, IA) –The University of Northern Iowa Additive Manufacturing Center (AMC) is hosting four Foundry Educational Foundation (FEF) student interns for the summer of 2019. They will gain experience in the processing and operation of the metal casting additive manufacturing applications available in the lab including hard tooling, investment cast expendable patterns, sand printing and sand milling, as well as both research and production activities under the guidance and direction of the Project Managers.

The UNI American Foundry Society (AFS) student chapter cast metal frogs as a gift for attendees of the FEF College Industry Conference. The project started in the spring semester during FEF key professor Scott Giese’s Tooling Practices class. Each student was to provide an idea designed and rigged for a final project. Many great ideas were submitted and passed on to the UNI FEF advisory board at their annual meeting. The board chose the idea from Taite Gallagher of a brass frog as a tribute to casting history.

We are excited to be hosting two STEM camps this summer for middle schoolers to learn about 3D design, 3D printing, and virtual reality. Students will be able to don their paleontologist hat and dive into an immersive experience with dinosaurs. They will learn about 3D design and 3D printing plastic and sand as well as get the chance to tour the University of Northern Iowa Metal Casting Additive Manufacturing Center and Design Lab.
